History of Gortbrack Organic Farm

Gortbrack Organic Farm is a smallholding on the hills overlooking Tralee. Established in 1991, by Eileen Carroll and Ian McGrigor, and aptly named after its original state – it was covered in rushes (Gort - field and breac - speckled).

The farm is a model of biodiversity and native Irish habitats, including bog land, native woodland and hedgerows, pond wildlife, ancient ditches and stone walls.

It also demonstrates low impact living through a reed bed sewerage system and renewable heating systems.

Gortbrack is home to three purpose built cabins, accomodation for the ethical traveller, for holidays and residential training courses.

The farm produces organic vegetables and herbs on a small scale, designs eco gardens, propagates plants and trees, and plants native hedgerow and woodlands.

It is home to Kerry Earth Education Project, Gortbrack’s Environmental Education wing. KEEP runs ongoing environmental organic garden and habitat projects in primary and secondary schools, in local communities and and in day care centres.

Gortbrack Organic Farm hosts ‘Farm Tours and Nature Trails’ for primary and secondary schools, in service teacher training, eco summer camps, a variety of training courses in organics and local food production, habitats and biodiversity throughout the year.

This unique area of native habitats and biodiversity, with its unique mix of organic vegetable growing, bog land habitats, woodlands, pond life, animals, low impact living and the natural beauty of the place make Gortbrack a fascinating place of interest, all just waiting to be discovered.

Gortbrack is a GMO Free Zone (www.gmfreeireland.org)
